Ghana’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Kojo Bonsu, has announced plans to launch a Generation-Z Artificial Intelligence Club for tertiary students in Ghana to strengthen digital capacity and AI skills among young people.
The initiative will start with 50 students: 20 each from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Ghana, and 10 from the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT). The programme will run as a blended learning project.
Ambassador Bonsu made the commitment when leaders of the three universities paid a courtesy call on him at the Ghana Embassy in Beijing.
Universities present included KNUST, represented by Ghanaian Director of the Confucius Institute and Head of the Department of Architecture, Prof. Daniel Y. A. Duah; the University of Ghana, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo and her team; and UMaT, represented by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Richard Kwasi Amankwah. KNUST was earlier represented in China by Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. David Asamoah, who visited for the 2025 World Chinese Language Conference and a tour of Huawei facilities.
Ambassador Bonsu said there were “many opportunities for partnership in China” and pledged that the Embassy would work to connect Ghanaian tertiary institutions with industry and higher-education institutions in China for national development.
Head of Chancery Alexander Ben-Aquaah highlighted the long-term benefits of strengthening academic and industrial linkages.
“Business persons come to China and go, but when the universities partner here, knowledge learnt stays in Ghana,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the universities, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Appiah Amfo expressed appreciation and welcomed the opportunity for deeper and mutually beneficial partnerships.
Members of the Embassy present included Ms. Helen Suhuyine Mahama (Minister Counselor/Political and Multilateral), Mr. Seth Agyenim Boateng (1st Secretary – Education & Diaspora), Ms. Cindy F. Sarkodie (3rd Secretary – Administration), and Mr. Moses Sackie (Counselor – Information).
